Septic Tank
A septic tank is an underground, sealed container made to hold and treat household wastewater. Inside the tank, heavy solids sink to the bottom while oils and lighter materials rise to the top. These solids stay in the tank, allowing the liquid wastewater to flow out into the drainfield. The drainfield then continues the treatment process by safely spreading and filtering the wastewater into the soil.

Conventional Septic System
A standard wastewater system uses a septic tank and an underground area called a drainfield. This type of system is most often used at single-family homes and small businesses. The septic tank holds wastewater while solids settle, then the liquid flows into the drainfield for further treatment.
A gravel or stone drainfield is a common design that has been used for many years. Wastewater moves from the septic tank into shallow trenches filled with gravel or stone. A fabric layer is placed on top to keep dirt and debris from mixing with the clean stone.
As the wastewater moves through the stone, it is cleaned further by natural bacteria in the soil below. These systems work well but take up a lot of space, which means they may not be a good fit for every property or soil condition.

Chamber Septic System
Gravelless drainfields have been used for more than 30 years in many states and are now a common replacement for traditional gravel systems. These systems come in several designs, such as open-bottom chambers, fabric-wrapped pipes, and lightweight synthetic materials. Many gravelless systems are made using recycled materials, which helps reduce their impact on the environment.
One popular type of gravelless system is the chamber system. Chamber systems are designed to replace gravel or stone drainfields and are easier to transport and install. They work well in areas with high groundwater levels, places where water use changes often—such as vacation homes—or locations where gravel is hard to find.
A chamber system uses a row of connected chambers placed in the ground and covered with soil. Wastewater flows from the septic tank into these chambers through pipes. Inside the chambers, the wastewater spreads out and reaches the surrounding soil, where natural bacteria help clean it before it returns to the ground.
